A Chiropractic Perspective on COVID-19 (coronavirus)

It is impossible to escape the reality of the presence and impact that COVID-19 has on our society. As of this writing, there are more than 125,000 known cases worldwide in more than 125 countries, resulting in 4,600 deaths. In Illinois, we have 32 confirmed cases, all in the suburban Chicago area, with no confirmed deaths. Illinois updates can be found here.

Right now, the concern is two-fold. The first is that older adults are overwhelmingly at higher risk of sickness or death, especially those with medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. The second is trying to reduce the spread of the virus, which is compounded by our currently limited resources for testing in the United States, and the lag time between the incubation period and the showing of symptoms.

At Body Bliss Wellness Center, we are taking this threat and the potential spread of the virus seriously. This includes the following:

  • Routinely sanitize all surfaces that patients and staff may come in contact with.

  • All staff washing/sanitizing hands after each patient contact.

  • Have sanitizer available for patient use

  • Monitor patient conditions to limit potential exposure to our office setting, as well as our own staff

With that being said, understand the current risk of contracting the virus remains low, along with the death rate. Let’s put this into perspective. Has something like this happened before in history? What was done?

The flu of 1918 was one of the most deadly infections in our modern history. Approximately 500 million people were infected across the world which was about one third of the world’s population at the time. It killed 20 to 50 million people, most of which were young, healthy adults.

They did the same things as you are seeing today; no drugs or vaccines available, masks and public gatherings were shut down.

What is interesting about that is that chiropractic seemed to be having very different statistics for their patient populations. Of the 1,635 patients with flu treated during that period, only one death occurred. At the same time 4,953 patients were seen by medical doctors and 274 passed away from the virus. But why?

When your spine is properly aligned, the body’s nervous system communication is unimpaired. The organs and the immune system are working at their full capacity. In a study conducted in 2010 the spinal adjustment triggered the production of Interleukin-2 which regulates the white blood cell activities.

Another major factor that we are dealing with with this current situation is perceived stress of getting sick. The media and social media are putting extreme pressure and emphasis on the public. In a 2010 study, they found that chiropractic and other complementary health approaches can help with feeling better emotionally, coping with health problems as well as reducing your stress levels.

If you are unsure of how strong your immune system is, we can look at your most recent labs or order a new set of blood-work to see where you stand health-wise. We will make specific recommendations based on your labs to get your immune system working at an optimal level.

The human body is amazing and can do amazing things if given the chance. Be proactive, take care of yourself and make sure your nervous system and immune system are communicating as well as they can.
